    Hi all,

This all started with a virus or a few viruses anyway. It was the Windows XP Antivirus 2008 virus, and basically it changed permissions on profile folders to make them read "null" and removed the desktop and screen saver tabs, etc. I was able to clean the virus with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware after hooking the drive up with a usb2.0 to Sata adapter.

However, I did not realize the permissions were messed up at the time, and so I could not access my computer at all. I didn't know what was wrong, so I attempted an XP repair and got a blue screen of death 0000007b. There were some errors that came up during the install and said the file could not be corrupted or copied so I had no choice but to skip them.

So anyway I got a bright idea and installed another copy of XP on the same partition. By doing that I was able to actually install the Malwarebytes and get rid of it, and I could see that the permissons were ******* up on the profile folders. I fixed the permissions errors, but the new install of XP did not have any of my former settings, so I moved everything to that new profile. I also tried moving all files in the old windows directory to the new one, so I would have all of the .inf's and device drivers I once had. I thought this would fix the issue completely, so I turned off the PC and went to bed.

The next night I booted and choose the "XP" install (the new one) and got the splash screen but then got a blank black screen with a white mouse cursor I can move around...but that's it. I tried doing a repair on that install of XP and ended up having to point it to some audio drivers, but it seemed to work. I get the same results, even in safe mode. Safe mode has the black screen with the cursor but the safe mode words in each corner. I'm trying to figure out what is going on here.

All I did was move over Windows files that were not present in my new installation, I checked each one of them individually. If it can't see the profile, then shouldn't it create a new one.

So i'm stuck, either the BSOD install or the black screen with white cursor install. Is there anyway out of this mess? If I hook up the drive externally with the adapter I can still see all of the files and everything looks fine.

    thanks,
    mtaffer

I assume you are hooking the drive up to another computer?

First see if you can copy your data files across to the other computer. If you can the most satisfactoty way out of this mess is to format the drive and start over. You may find these notes helpful .....
Once Windows is up and running make sure that you install the chipset drivers before anything else, including the graphics drivers.
It's not as simple as that - many files need to be registerd with Windows - a simple copy is generally not enough.
