My OS: Windows XP Home SP2

I was exploring logs in my C:\windows directory and found some curious entries in the KBxxxxxx.log files (which I'm guessing are automatic update logs).

Is it normal to have failed/error lines in KBxxxxxx.log files such the ones shown below? If not, how might I be able to address the issue? I did a few searches on this BBS for strings from the quoted excerpts below but didn't find anything that seems to relate.

These are certainly not all of the failed/error lines in the log. I hope this info is enough to help you draw a conclusion.

Here are some added thoughts (in the event the failed/error lines are not normal).

Could the issue I had in this thread be related? (That SFC issue was discovered/resolved after the KBxxxxxx.log files were created. I suspect that cab file was corrupt for quite some time.)

Perhaps I should just wait until the next series of automatic updates come from MS and compare log characteristics.

Is WinXP smart enough to keep track of the failures/errors it encounters and fix them later when it is able?

The automatic updates SEEMED to go smoothly. If they didn't actually go smoothly, perhaps a prominent notification by the OS would be appropriate.

    OK...enuf rambling...I'll wait for opinions and/or advice. :)

What you see is 'normal' I think - I checked out my log for the same update and found similar lines. I think the hotfix is looking for all the possible variationd of file versions on the system. There was enough positive stuff in my log to convince me that the hotfix was installed OK.

However it is quite straighrforward to check which hotfixes are installed ....

Download and run qfecheck.exe from Microsoft
Yes - you will be informed through Windows Update if a hotfix has failed to install - I have Updates set to notify and always go to the Update site so that I can see what it wants to download rather than click on the Update icon in the Notification Area. If an update fails on Autoupdate you will be either advised at the time or offered it again on the next update.

"What you see is 'normal' I think - I checked out my log for the same update and found similar lines. "

Thanks, Pete. It's comforting to know someone other than me has the same "failed/error" stuff. It's a little disconcerting sometimes for me to discover these things.

I hope I don't seem like a pest. I'm just on a mission to have a better understanding of "errors" and anomolies (as I initiallly perceive them anyway) I find and make sure my computer is CLEAN and secure. (Yep, I found another issue via SysInternals' "RootkitRevealer ", but I am going to save that for another thread if I don't come up with enough conclusive info on my own.) :)

"Download and run qfecheck.exe from Microsoft "

I downloaded, installed, and ran qfecheck.exe /v from the command prompt in a DOS window and all of the hotfixes it listed (41) showed up as "Current on system." :)

"I have Updates set to notify and always go to the Update site so that I can see what it wants to download "

Sounds like a good way to go. I will do that too. Then I can keep closer tabs on exactly what I'm installing...and create restore points before installing.

    Thanks again.

Good point re. Updates this morning - the shield appeared unexpectedly in the Notification Area (not the second Tuesday in the month). Went to Microsoft Update and was offered Outlook 3 Junk Mail filter - I have Office 2003 instaled, but not Outlook. Enough said :)

BTW for some unknown reason I keep on getting Outlook Junk Mail filters offered and they won't install for obvious reasons - so why am I offered them. Another of XP's little mysteries :)
