My young (13) grandsons computer...XP Professional wont bootup apparently.
I have had him reboot and press numerous keys during the boot process F1 F8 F12 SHIFT etc...but no go.

This failure has apparently risen due to some inteference related to passwords.

I have been told that pressing F10 during reboot will kick it into repair mode.

    Any opinions???

    Thanks

Press and hold F8 as soon as the computer beeps on boot up.

This gives you various options like Safe Mode, Last known good, etc

Can you be more specific about 'won't boot'?

Won't boot at all? Boots part way and then freezes?

See this post if the logon has disappeared from the welcome screen.

To enter Repair mode boot from the installation Cd, ignore the first Repair option, continue with install, accept the agreement and on the next screen is the option to Repair - that's the one you want. Go here for more info under R = Repair the Windows Installation.

    Thanks pete,
Have tried the F8 but he says that nothing happens.....I'll have to contact him again, have been trying but can't get to him he is about 50 miles away, but I should see him on Sunday anyway.

Sorry for being a bit vague about what "actually "takes place in the boot process, will keep working on it with him.

Thanks for the bit on the repair mode.

Thats about all I can say at the moment.

    THANKS

    If F8 doesn't work here's a couple of ideas;

A key is stuck down on the keyboard.
The F keys are dual function and they are in the wrong mode.
