All I can say is that I have a US Robotics External that was purchased ASAP when first 56k came out. ( app $150 at the time )

It has been on everything from Win3.1 to XP.

Yes. I said XP Pro. Just for the giggles of it I just plugged it into Serial COMM2 and XP grabbed it and ran with it with no interference from me.

And it is also sittin here pretty as you please along side of my Cable Modem. With no problems created by it. I do not have a Dial-up ISP so I can not fully test it but I see no reason why it would not work. It does dial phone numbers very nicely.

If the new ones are as good as my OLD one I do not see where anyone would go wrong with one.

    I forgot.

The modem in question also did a VERY GOOD job when we used to play Links Golf with our Friend in Canada using it.

We now of course have cable. Which at times ain't the best either.

I only have access to dialup. Any difference between USB powered and a/c powered? Considering this one.

    I would say YES.

I can not confirm because I have not used a USB Modem.

But from bits and pieces that I have heard locally the Serial Port AC powered Modem is better. And it does make a bit of sense too.

    It is completely self-contained.

It is on a Serial port that is BIOS asigned and is not dependent on the OS at all for anything.

USB is a somewhat shared device.

And shared devices do not work as well as standalone.

    That is my thinking anyway.
