I have a US robotics external voice/fax modem v90 that I am trying to install on a windows 2000 computer. I have done this several times without fail but for some reason it wont work on one machine. The modem is detected in the device manager, it says its working properly. Yet the diagnostics fail and it wont function. I have removed the other modem in the computer and reinstalled to get the same issue. I have also replaced the serial cable and modem with known working models to see if it could have been those but the same issue occurs. There is nothing sharing the IRQ or com ports and I have tried adjusting the com ports to see if that would have an effect but still I get the same error. I am currently thinking it is either a software conflict or com that the com ports are failing for some reason.

My basic question is does anyone have any idea what could be causing this to happen? Is there something I am missing in my troubleshooting path? I dont want to reformat and reinstall windows again if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I forgot to mention I have tried both 3rd party and official drivers for this device. The only thing I can think of that I have not tried is reinstalling the com port drivers.

    Welcome to the BBS, :)
A couple of things to try. Uninstall the Modem and unplug it. Delete the com ports and let windows reinstall them. Install the latest W2K modem driver available for this model, then power up the modem and plug it into the com port. Now do the diagnostics thing in modem properties.

Whether it fits here or not I do not know.

But from my own problems years back, I do have to ask. Or mention something to check. Your call.

Are the COMM ports turned on in the BIOS ?

Yup. Good thing to check. I can remember on lots of systems having to disable in BIOS the port I would be using for the modem.

I never really did understand why but our hardware tech said I should stick to network admin and just do what she said when it came to hardware. :D

I had a similar problem with windows 2000 and a dell lap top. 1st are you sure the modem works. 2nd. Was windows 2000 installed on an older machine. If thats the case check the date of the bios. If the date of the bios is older than windows 2000 you may need to upgrade the bios. I flashed an upgrade on the bios and it works great now. I'm not sure all bios are flahable but you may want to look into it. Good luck
