I had a Seagate External HD connected to an old Gateway Desktop via USB running Windows XP. The drive has never made any noises & the lights work like they always have. It disappeared from Windows Explorer. When I uninstalled & attempted to reinstall, it never made it through the add new hardware wizard. Wizard just froze. I took it to another Desktop, a Dell running XP. It made it through the Add Hardware wizard but was not visible in Windows Explorer again. In Device Manager it had a bunch of symbols & some foreign language as it's Device Name the first time. I uninstalled & reinstalled again. This time it showed as storage device in device manager but was still not showing up in windows explorer. If I can get it to install on the Dell again & show up again in device manager, how can I get my files off it without being able to access it through Explorer?

edit: I should also mention that shortly after this my gateway gave up the orange light & would not boot. I am assuming the PS is dead as the test button kicks the fan on for a split second & then dies while the MB green light is still on.

    Thank you in advance!

If the drive shows up in Device Manager, but not Windows Explorer go to Disk Management (Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc > Enter) and see if a drive letter has been assigned.

If not assign a drive letter, but try nothing else if the drive is not seen as formatted with a partition.

    Try another USB cable.

If the drive fails to be recognised there is either a problem with the drive controller in the external case or with the drive itself.

Remove the drive from the case and connect to the desktop as a slave and see if it recognised (alternatively install it in another external case).

If the drive is seen and your files are present the drive is OK and the case controller has most likely failed.

If you end up in this situation check out the drive with Seagates Disk Diagnostic software.
