I have an external hard drive that was working perfectly fine until the other day. Now when I plug it into the usb port the external hard drive makes a beeping sound and XP says the device is malfunctioning and it does not recognize it.

I tested it in a few other machines and it worked and in others it did not.
They are all identical machines. All running the same OS and software

Any ideas what the problem could be.

    Hello fitzberg and welcome :)

Sounds like the drive is failing.

You can try uninstall/re installing it, but if it is failing, will not do much good.

Assuming a USB connection, click on the Safely Remove icon in the tray, in the dialog box, right click on the drive and click stop. Then reboot, the System will detect it again.

    Regards - Charles
