I just bought an external hard drive for back up. When I plug it in Windows (Vista) looks for a driver and can't locate it. While the computer recognises that something has been plugged in, it fails in the driver search and does not recognise the drive itself. The hard drive does not require a driver as it is designed around the operating system drivers.

I know the drive is OK as I have tried it with 3 other computers, 1x XP, 1X Vista and 1 X Windows 7 and it has been recognised as it should be each of them so the problem has to be with this computer itself.

    Suggestions please.

First step in cases such as this ....

Go to Device Manager and uninstall all USB controllers and root hubs and reboot to allow Windows to redetect and reinstall them - then test.

If that fails try updating the chipset drivers.
