I just set up an external hard drive, Maxtor 120 GB, to my Dell 8200 computer which is running Windows 2000.

The question is: Do I have to have the hard drive on all the time when the computer is on or can I turn it off and still run my computer. I wasn't sure if the computer would act "twitchy" if I had a hard drive hooked up but powered down.

I have one on firewire and another on USB. I power them up only when I am going to use them, as I only use them for doing backups.
