I recently salvaged a 80 GB HD from a system that was pretty much fried. The system got scrapped so I saved the HD. (Hey, 80gigs is 80 gigs). I had a spare external HD cradle so I decided to pop it in that. It mounts fine on my linux and mac machines but won't mount on my Windows machine which is of course the machine I want to use it on. Windows just says "The USB Device has malfunctioned, click this window...) Could jumpering have something to do with it? Does it need to be jumpered master/slave/etc? Any help would be much appericated.

    Thanks all!

Have you tried it on another Win XP machine? If it works on another machine I might suspect the USB system/drivers or maybe the drive management system. How is it formatted? People have recommended that it be jumpered as master (not having set up one I am just going by previous threads).

Try connecting it to a header inside the case. A quick test is to swap it with the connectors of a CD drive and jumper it the same way.

Do a search of the BBS forums for "usb external ", there will be quite a deal of basic information for you.
