As a present received an external DVD Blueray player but using the HDMI cable supplied with player and connected to HDMI socket on my computer fails to respond. The software used is VLC Lan for all video playing currently on computer. The monitor has no other connection than from monitor to computer.

How many HDMI sockets do you have? I am sure you tried another one if you have more than one. Bad HDMI cable maybe?

Does Windows recognize the external drive, i.e. does it show up in Device Manager or Computer? If not, VLC won't be able to "open disk".

Look in Device Manager, it may be listed as something like this:
    "xxxxx combo device class"
in which case delete it from device manager, unplug the drive and reconnect it.
Windows should now load the proper drivers.

Thank you for responses, there is only one HDMI.In device manager there is no reference to the external player. Only one DVD/CD is shown for the internal DVD/CD player, unfortunately this device does not function but is shown in Device Manager.

There in lies the problem, the device is not recognized by Windows.
    Two possible causes are:
    1. HDMI port not working/HDMI cable not working.
    2. Windows does not have drivers for the external drive.

Mr.Bill gave solution to check #1.
#2 = If drive came with a disk, load the drivers, or grab them from the manufacturer site.

As per my understanding, normally computer HDMI interface is only for output. You can't use it to connect anything else as it doesn't accept input signals.

DVD player has no software disk or checking the Web site for the player shows no software available.
Referring to HDMI, what is the procedure to check if working or not? Checked on replacement of cable, to find that prices vary from £15 to £500, how a cable warrants £500 is beyond me.

AFAIK the HDMI port on your computer is an OUTPUT port for connecting to a monitor as are the VGA and the DVI-D ports - in that respect I can connect my laptop via an HDMI cable to a second monitor or projector. Likewise the HDMI cable supplied with your player would enable connection to a TV with HDMI input, but the player would probably need to be independently powered.

Does your external BlueRay player not have a USB port? Posting the make and model no. of the player would be helpful in resolving this issue.

There are HDMI inputs and outputs. A computer can have an HDMI output port that sends data to the HDMI input port of a monitor, tv or multimedia sound system input or pass thru.

The external drive in question likely has an HDMI output port that should connect to an HDMI input port on a computer. Most likely the computer here does not have an HDMI input port, most do not have them.

PeteC may have hit the nail on the head. Could be the DVD player is for TV.

Model of DVD player is by Technika BRSS10 and bought by my son in law to use with his TV and most probably is not suitable for my computer. There is no USB connection, there is HDMI and Ethernet sockets. Player has a HDMI cable only. My apology for not quoting make and model of the player. at start of my thread.
