I am running Win98SE. I have recently purchased a Wolverine 2100 external drive. The drivers installed and the system recognizes the drive when it's connected, but the external never shows up in My Computer. The remove icon appears in the system tray, but I have no access to the drive itself.

Does anybody know what's missing or what to do about this?

What size is the hdd ?

Have you partitioned and formated the hdd yet ? Till you do it will not show up in My Computer. You will need to use FDISK , to make one or more partitions, but be double sure you are working on the correct hdd, (all data will be lost). Same goes when it is time to format the hdd, be sure of the drive.

The disk has a capacity of 100 gigs.

The disk is preformatted to FAT32. It is accessible when plugged into a computer running XP.

From within Windows run FDISK-say yes to large disk support- select option #5 -select the usb drive (if you have only 1 internal hdd the USB will be #2)-now select option #4 --post what is displayed.

If the Type displayed is DOS , then I'm not sure just what is going on.

Right click on My Compter -select properties-open Device Manager- are there any red/yellow flags displayed ?

First ensure that the external hard drive is formatted fat32 and not ntsf which xp/ 2000 / nt use but windows 98 cannot see
Second USB installs are a diffirent format than xp.
Generally you install the software .
    Reboot.
Plug in the device and then let it install. You will most likely need the Windows 98 install disk handy.
Interestingly often you have to try every means of install. Often you have to even ignore the specific product install instructions.
There were often clear out deals to be had for products that did not install in Windows 98 as per instructions.
You can try to install the usb device in diffirent ways.
USB can be plugged and in and out when the computer is running.

Thank you for your assistance, but the problem is moot now. That computer died 2 days ago and I have acquired a machine which is running on XP and which has no trouble seeing the drive, nor letting me write to it.
