Trying to locate an external case for a TDK (intenal) cd-rw.
Had no luck finding one using google. Was hoping someone here could point me to the
right direction/site that has such an item for sale.....

Hate to let it go because it creates cd's so fast.

TDk, CDW and Bestbuy dont show any.

    thanks,
    savagcl

Those are good sites to keep in mind, thanks.

The cd-rw is originally for an internal bay using the molex(?) 4 pin power
connection. Its losing its bay for a sound card front panel and there are no
spare front bays left open. So i'm looking for an external case with internal
    connections........

thanks again, I'll go through those sites again.

sounds like i'll have to make my own case. No problem, make a wood case and drill a hole
in the PC case for the power cable.

    thanks, guys,

All 5½ external drives will work fine with any internal cd drive. They have a built in 4 pin power connector and the 40 pin ribbon cable.

I think Steve is referring to an external drive case rather than a drive - I took apart a Maxtor One Touch to replace the drive which failed when I dropped it  and the standard molex power connector was there for the drive.

If you don't need a case for the drive you can run it off of this. http://www.surpluscomputers.com/store/main.aspx?p=ItemDetail&item=CRD10181 IDE to USB 2.0 External Drive Cable SBT-UI235. That does not come with a connection for sound. As Steve said any 5½ internal CD drive will work in a 5½ external case. I did just the opposite of what you want to do. I got a good deal on a external firewire DVD+RW drive a few years ago. Took it out of the case and installed it in my computer.

Thank you, that looks like something i could work with.
Its not a big chunk of money either (always nice).
I'll follow up with them and see what happens.

    thanks again,

    Steve,

Looks good but, a question - The built-in power connector is 3 pronged, i assume that means
it just need a power cable plugged into a wall socket and not the 4 wire (internal power
    connection)?

    thanks for the help/info,
    savagcl

Needs both - molex connector powers the drive from an internal power supply in the box which in turn is powered from wall socket via the external 3 pin connector.

I have one of these, comes in very handy when working on spare ide drives of any kind, including cdrw drives, and also is good when servicing another's system because don't have to remove the drive from the case.

    http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0150634

It comes with it's own power supply that connects to the power port of the ide device. It works flawlessly, xppro already contains the necesary drivers for it, but it comes with a cd & drivers for win 98's & Millenium.
