Having exported my bookmarks from NScape 7 as part of preparing for a Win2K reinstallation, I find I don't know how to put them back if /when I reinstall NScape/Firefox. "Import" simply lists the b'marks in a separate window.

    Oyster,

If you plan to reformat, and install the same version of Netscape, with the same Profile, you can save yourself a lot of work by doing this:

First: Make a backup copy of your entire Profiles Folder

    Install Netscape

The following steps are very important:
Don't let Netscape launch once it is installed, and don't create a new profile. Close any window that opens at this point. This is so no Profiles Folder is created. You will copy the entire Profiles folder from your backup.

    Open Windows Explorer
From the Tools menu select: Folder Options | View tab
Under "Hidden files and folders" select "Show hidden files and folders ". Click "OK "

    Next:
Copy the Profiles folder backup to the Mozilla folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla
If you backed up on CD, then check the File Attributes in the Properties of the files to ensure that they have not been changed to "Read Only "

    Start Netscape
The Profile Manager may open (It shouldn't, but in the event it does...)
    Click on: "Create Profile, "
Use the same Profile name as the Profile you just copied from the backup

    Open Mail & Newsgroups
Click on: Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
In the right panel, at the bottom of the page, in the "Local directory" section, ensure the path to the Mail Account folder for your Profile is correct .
    (It should be.)

To prevent having the Profile Manager open each time you open Netscape, right click on the Desktop Shortcut.
    Select: Properties
    Select: Shortcut
In the "Target" field add this command switch: -p yourprofilename
It will look similar to this, and note there is one trailing space after the final quotation mark:

    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -p yourprofilename -quiet

The -quiet disables the splash screen, your choice.

When you export an Address Book, it's best to export it as an LDIF file. Then when imported it will be viewed in the left pane of the Address Book, as whatever you named it. Then you can highlight all the entries with Ctrl+A, and drag or copy them to the Personal Address Book.

    Perfect!

You thought of everything, Ramona. Very much obliged for that lucid piece of tech writing.

Now, is FireFox -- ahem! -- less volatile than NScape? (I've had to reinstall NScape several times; this time your instructions saved mail and bookmarks). As a general question, am I at a disadvantage in relying on a browser like FireFox not in common use?

    Oyster,

    You're most welcome!

As to Firefox, you will get mixed reviews, as members using Firefox think it is awesome, but personally, I prefer a suite, rather than relying to a separate browser and Mail application.. Firefox is still in Beta, but I'm sure it will be the ultimate browser in time...

That said, Mozilla 1.7 was released yesterday, and if you want an excellent, fast, stable browser and Mail & Newsgroups application, do give it a try. You will not regret it, and all those nasty bugs in Netscape, are long gone in Mozilla.

MHO, and I bet I catch it from those Firefox users.... :p
