Has anyone found a way to export the AOL Address Book into a format which can be imported into OLExpress? Is there a way to import the AOL filing cabinet into OLExpress folders? I have a couple of clients who use AOL and are SO ready to move to another ISP but I do not know how to salvage their emails in the filing cabinet nor their address book.

For exporting the address book, an AOL tech gave me the suggestion of creating an email to be sent to everyone in the address book. Then without sending it, copy all the names listed in the TO: field, and paste it somewhere. the tech gave me no hope for salvaging emails except to forward them, individually, one by one, to the new address.

If there is no workaround that anyone knows of, then I have another question: Is it possible to keep the AOL browser software on the machine without a dialup, just for a way to access/read the old emails? Is it going to try to interfere with OLExpress as the default email handler? Or is it going to fail to load because there is no active dialup? I remember that Juno used to be pretty nasty about being onboard when you were using another dialup with OLExpress. If Juno was onboard, it wanted to be the default and you had a fight on your hands every time you tried to dial up.

Has anyone had a successful experience with an AOL change-over? I would love to defeat their hammer lock on their dissatisfied customers wishing to escape….

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

Thanks Daisy and Jim. I’ve looked at your recommendations and checked out a few more of my own. It seems that AOL has intentionally kept their formats non-exchangeable, without remorse as only a reckless giant can do. There are services out there which will convert AOL & other client data into a more universal format for import and export for a fee (I’ve found a range from $10 to $49). A fee for the favorites, a fee for mail and a fee for address book.

However, I did find a freebie that looks promising for all three (address book, filing cabinet and favorites) at AOLeave

Blink appears to be a wide open invitation for a spam deluge, which I’d prefer to avoid. Jim’s suggestion, though, appears to be online storage of bookmarks, which purports to be accessible from or downloadable into whatever client you’re working in. no mention of price after a cursory review of the site, so it may or may not be free.

Looks like an experimental research project here. I was hoping someone might have had experience with one of these, guess I’m the guinea pig here. If I can find anything worth recommending, I will post back, maybe save someone else the research time. Thanks again for your input.

maureen--I am embarrassed. I used a program from SyncIt called aol_favcon.exe some years ago for the purpose of transferring my AOL Favorites to IE. Worked fine and was free. I now see that SyncIt wants $50 for whatever program they offer at the URL I gave. It seems they also include Webspace for that fee, but if you do not want the Webspace that may not be a good deal.
    aol_favcon.exe no longer seems available.
