    What determines the default view option in XP - i.e., thumbnails, tiles, icons, list, or details? Can this setting be changed; I get so tired of having to change from icons to list I am about to pull out my hair. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    From Windows Explorer, click "Tools" then "Folder Options" then the view tab. make sure you have WE open in the view you want, then click "apply to all folders ".

    Glad you fixed it. Nope, you don't look stupid. Stupid was me, before Christmas, underestimating the time involved because of the "some assembly required" admonishment on the kids' toys.
