I know for quite a while, when I would double-click on a folder in Explorer, that same window would then open up to the folder I had clicked on. Now, a new window appears. This is something I "m still not used to, and since I can just hit the back button if I want to navigate back, I'd rather not have my desktop cluttered up with Explorer folders.

Is there a setting I can check/uncheck, to make explorer windows open up in the same window?

Hi Paul. Click Start< My Computer< Tools< Folder Options. When the folder options window opens under Browse Folders make sure the option that says open each folder in the same window is selected and click apply and ok for the changes to take effect.

Thanks, Evan, that was one of the first things I checked. That option has been checked---not sure that I've ever had it otherwise.

Did you unselect it and reselect it just to make sure the setting was set properly? Also did you reboot the computer after making the change?
