Using Win98 w/ explorer.exe from IE5.01, ver 4.72.3612.1700, and it stops working from time to time. Could be corrupted, would like to replace it but I now have IE6.0 SP1. My Win 98 cab has an earlier version of explorer.exe , ver 4.72.3110.1. Will this cause any problems if I install the older version of explorer.exe? I cannot find another copy of the explorer.exe from IE5.01 anywhere. It appears that explorer.exe is not in the cabs of IE 6.0 or 5.5?

    Thanks,

    Marvin

First, explorer.exe is a windows file and has nothing to do with Internet Explorer. Can you be more specific with and it stops working from time to time.
I am running Win98 with IE6, and have version 4.72.3110.1.

Thanks Aleekat for your reply. Agreed that explorer.exe is not a part of IE, but the version on my computer was installed when I upgraded to IE5.01 according to info found on the net. But my cab files have the win98FE version and so does the Win98SE cab files. IE5.01 is no longer available for download and I was wondering if I replaced the version installed when IE5.01 was installed with the older version that came with Win98FE or SE if it will work properly.

When I bring up Explorer.exe and work with it for awhile, such as moving files from the hard drive to the zip drive, and vice versa, explorer freezes and and I have to close it with control, alt, delete before I can get it to work again. After two or three times I have to re boot the computer in order to get it working again. When I press control, alt, delete it shows that explorer.exe has stopped responding. I thought that maybe the file is corrupted and want to replace it with the same version but my cab files have earlier versions that came with win98FE and SE(I am still using FE, but I have the SE disk).

    Thanks,

    Marvin

I noticed that you are running Win98 w/ the earlier version, I guess that if it works for you, it should work for me, but why did Microsoft upgrade explorer.exe with the installation of IE 5.01? After I
E 5.01 I went to 5.5 and then 6.0, but the version that came with 5.01 is still in my windows folder???

IE did not ( or should not have ) upgrade(ed) EXPLORER.EXE. That is an operating system file. And a MAIN one at that.

To fix the EXPLORE.EXE problem may require a reinstall of the OS whuch I believe is the better and safer way

    IEXPLORE.EXE is the IE file.

EXPLORER.EXE may not even be that actuall probem file. It may be another file that is causing the problem. As within the OS there are some incompatabilities somewhere.

Thanks BillyBob, If my Win98FE cab file has explorer.exe ver. 4.72.3110.1 under Windows/Options, where did the explorer.exe ver 4.72.3612.1700 in my Windows folder come from?http://home.att.net/~wymette/programs/IEDeskUp.txt See the attached above. I would hate to reinstall win98 FE or install Win98SE since my win98FE came with my computer from Dell and it does not take too kindly to me trying to make changes to it.

I would like to replace the 4.72.3612.1700 with the 4.72.3110.1 version but am concerned about messing up the system. The 4.72.3612.1700 was included in the full install of IE5.01. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=246073 Ie 4sh195.cab file. I am currently using IE 6.0 SP1 and no longer have the 5.01 files and Microsoft no longer has it available for download.

I have no idea unless it came from some Windows Updates. and would bet good money on the fact that other files were updated also.

I also did not know that IE might update it also.

That may well be the root of the problem in the first place. OEM machines ( like DELL ) do not take kindly to changes.

I just took a peek on my wifes machine which has 98SE on it.

    Explorer.exe is version 4.72.3110.1

The same is on another machine with 98 SE on it
