Explorer displays folders, blinks, then can't see folders for 10 seconds...

The last month or so, when I open up Windows Explorer, half the time I will get the folder to open up (My DOcuments or any of its sub-directories)--but after a split second of seeing my files in the folder, they all disappear (from view--not from the hard drive). They might take 5 seconds to re-appear--or they might not re-appear at all until I shut down explorer and then re-try.

This has never happened to me before. Any suggestions?

I read the article. I did find in my right-click menu two options that I never use (browse with Xnview and Browse with FastStone--both of these graphics programs--only FastStone is actually installed right now).

After installing ShelExView, I looked in the list but didn't see either one there.

OK--I see that page you linked to says to disable all non-system extensions. Not sure how to do this. Almost all were for Windows, made by Microsoft, regardless of the Type column.

    Any suggestions?

Highlighted Extensions are disabled by clicking the Red button, enabled by clicking the green button.

Pete, yes, I disabled a few (that I don't think I ever see) for Open Office by clicking that red button.

My question was how to sort according to MS and non-MS, but I see now that I can sort by Company and disable them that way.

I did install an Explorer utility that allows me to sort sub-directories by size of teh folder. I'm gonna disable that one and see what happens. I forgot all about this one.

You know I think that did it. I'll wait another week and then uninstall that darned thing. At the time I wanted to find out which folders were the largest, and XP wouldn't let me see. I found a few SPs and other such downloads that way. But I sure don't need that utility if its gonna goof up explorer, that's for sure.

Pete, thanks for the link to ShellExView. I do believe that did the trick.

I hope you have nailed the culprit - fingers crossed :)

I don't know which applet you installed to see folder sizes, but I find TreeSize useful on occasions -no shell integration, i.e. no right click options in Explorer on my machine.
