Can you get to Add/Remove programs? If so, uninstall Internet Explorer. Also check to see if you have the USB supplement installed and if so, remove it.

Now using Ctrl+Alt+Del, shut down any running programs except for Systray and Explorer. Insert your Win95 CD and rerun setup. When asked whether you would like to keep an existing file, choose No. Once setup is complete you will need to reinstall an upgraded version of IE and the USB supplement (if it exists).

It's worth a shot before you go ahead and format/lose everything.

Should you not be able to get to Add/Remove programs without an error, post back and we'll go from there.

I can get to the "Add/Remove Programs ", but I can't open it and I think that it's because I get the error as soon as it starts windows. I can't get to the "Run" command box or anything once, I get that first error. I tired to reloaded windows last night, but kept getting the error "Already had a OS installed and can't upgrade "....I don't want to upgrade, just reload............Any more ideas???
    Thanks for all your help......

You can try to run setup from the DOS prompt but first you must remove IE. What version are you running (IE>Help>About)? I have a batch file available that will remove IE5 from the DOS prompt and then you can continue with setup.

Well it's worth a shot so here goes....

Go to the following site and download the IE4 removal batch file. Unzip it and place IE4BYE.BAT either on a floppy or in C:\

Reboot the computer to the DOS prompt. Ensure you have access to the CD-ROM drive (simply type the drive letter, ie: D:\)

Now go ahead and run the batch file by typing the file name at the appropriate prompt (A:\IE4BYE.BAT or C:\IE4BYE.BAT).

Once complete, insert the Windows CD. Switch to the drive prompt (D:\) and type setup.exe

Please remember to choose NO to keeping existing files.

    Good luck!

Reboot the computer to the DOS prompt.***

Hey PLansdowne You surprise me very much.

Are you referring to the COMMAND Prompt which is arrived at by rebooting and hitting the F8 key or holding down the Control key to get the menu ? Then selecting Command Prompt only.

The MS DOS PROMPT in 95 & 98 is arrived at from within Windows itself.

I myself never boot from the HD to re-install Windows. But that is me and my machine. Someone elses or an OEM machine may be quite different.

    Rick A.

No matter how you re-installl make sure you watch the setup screens CAREFULLY and make sure that Windows goes back into the existing folder. When booting from the HD( with any version of Windows ) it has a tendency to create a new Windows.000 folder if you do not watch.

    Also YES to the below.

Please remember to choose NO to keeping existing files.

Nope. I THINK IE only has to be removed if IE 5 and above is installed,. I myself never did that either. But I have a machine that I put together.

Just a few ideas from my experiences with ALL versions of Windows right from 3.1 on up to and including ME.

#1 question what type of machine are you working on ? Home ( custom ) built or OEM ? Can make a HUGH difference.

If you do have an OEM machine then you can more than likely trash all of my ideas OTHER THAN AV & NORTON.

#2 Have you given some thought to ( or tried ) booting from a Floppy with CRDOM support and re-installing from the Win95 folder on the CD ? A Win98 Startup disk works very nicely for this.

Again making sure it goes back into the existing folder.

#3 Booting from the HD to re-install Windows may be problematic depending on what is in the Config.sys or Autoexec.bat. More so with 95.

I myself have never gotten a good soild and reliable re-install of ANY version of Windows when booting from the HD.

#4 Are you trying to go back in with the SAME ( or higher ) version of 95 that existed. Going to a higher version may work. But trying to go backward will not work. At least not properly.

Do not ask and I won't have to lie about where I learned that.

#5. Antii-Virus and ANY NORTON ( or similiar ) stuff MUST be shut down. I mean shut down so that they do not relaod on a Windows restart until Windows is fully setup. This part goes for ANY version of Windows. Actually those things usually need to be re-install to have them work properly.

Here's a few answers to your questions:
    1. OEM "Acer ", "not mine a friends" :)
    2. Yes, I Always boot from a Floppy w/ CD support and that's the way I tried it a couple of days ago.
But it gives me a error, about an OS already is loaded.

    1. OEM "Acer ",

OK. That alone takes me right out of the picture.

I had one off them " ACER " once ( given to me ) and found it almost impossible to do anything with. It may be one of those machines that needs a SPECIAL boot floppy.

But it gives me a error, about an OS already is loaded.

This may have somthing to do with the machine in question. But I have not seen the message when booting to a Floppy.

    *POSSIBILITY *

Does the machine boot to the floppy first or go to the HD then to the Floppy. By going directly to the floppy it should not even know there is an existing OS on the HD.

    Lets see here.

You boot directly to the floppy.

You then try to run setup to install WIn95.

You then get the message that an OS is already installed.

New one to me. Now I am lost. Stumbling in the dark now.

Because of you boot from a power off state directly to the floppy, how in the World does it know there is already and OS on the HD. At this point it should have been no where near the HD.

    HHHMMMM !!!!!

    ???????

    Question.

Does it say something like " there is already and OS and ask if you wish to install anyway. " Now that I am into this I do recall seeing that message SOMEWHERE.

Does that machine have something like and Overlay that allows the BIOS to read more than an 8.4gig HD where you MUST boot to the HD first then are asked if you want to boot from A or C: ( Floppy or HD )

Now when I try to boot from the boot disk (downloaded it @ bootdisk.com) it says that "No drivers found, aborting installation "
No drivers found, Device driver not found "Banana" No valid CDrom device drivers selected.....And I have booted from this disk several times, with no problems...I even downloaded another copy and I'm getting the same errors..............
Please help, I want to get rid of the PC...........

Well, I guess you could say, I took the "Easy" way out and formatted the HD....That cleared that "OS already installed" too (imagine that) :)......As far as the boot disk you have to download CD drivers and change your config.sys & autoexec.bat files to see the CD (This is only in 95) :-(.......But it works now, I learned allot over this little deal and that's what it's all about (got to learn something) LOL............. Thanks for all your help guys....

    Hello again;

When I mentioned to boot to the DOS prompt I meant, Shut Down>Restart in MSDOS mode and/or Command Prompt.

IE4 must be removed prior to reinstalling Win95 (believe me, been there, done that and it's not fun).

I am guessing he was getting the error because the USB supplement was installed and windows thought there was a later version installed.

Too bad you had to format but am happy that your "ordeal" is over.
