    For weeks now I am gettting File Explorer crashes and I have tried Microsoft Knowledge base and sent numerous postings of the crashes with no replies as to what is causing it, from the event viewer I have extracted the most common cause as follows:

    Log Name: Application
    Source: Application Error
    Date: 06/04/2008 17:57:59
    Event ID: 1000
    Task Category: (100)
    Level: Error
    Keywords: Classic
    User: N/A
    Computer: Paul-PC
    Description:
    Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918e5d, faulting module ContextHandler.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x2a425e19, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x06d822d4, process id 0x10c4, application start time 0x01c897ef41b74fc9.
    Event Xml:
    <Event xmlns= "http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event ">
    <System>
    <Provider Name= "Application Error" />
    <EventID Qualifiers= "0 ">1000</EventID>
    <Level>2</Level>

    <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords>
    <TimeCreated SystemTime= "2008-04-06T16:57:59.000Z" />
    <EventRecordID>45421</EventRecordID>
    <Channel>Application</Channel>
    <Computer>Paul-PC</Computer>
    <Security />
    </System>
    <EventData>
    <Data>Explorer.EXE</Data>
    <Data>6.0.6001.18000</Data>
    <Data>47918e5d</Data>
    <Data>ContextHandler.dll_unloaded</Data>
    <Data>0.0.0.0</Data>

    <Data>10c4</Data>
    <Data>01c897ef41b74fc9</Data>
    </EventData>
    </Event>

    I appears that the crashes are caused by a "faulting module ContextHandler.dll_unloaded " so I have used ShellExView in the hope of tracking down the offending context handler but (including windows ones) there are over 300 in the list it is hard to find which one is causing it, I have disabled a few but then explore still crashed.

    I could go a few hours using explorer (or even days) then I will get 2 or 3 in an evening.

    I have gone as far as my knowledge allows me to, can anybody help?

    Explorer crashes

    Had similar problem and the best solution for me was to reload the operating system.
    Do a new installation not an upgrade an upgrade will reinstall the same problem
    then you can install explorer 7.

    Thanks for quick reply, and yes one of the programs listed from your link was Ashampoo WinOptimizer, and the file is in it's program folder so I am going to uninstall the program and hopefully it may stop the crashes.

    If works okay I will reinstall after a week and see if it returns and contact the company if the error comes back.

    As mentioned before uninstalled Ashampoo to cure Windows Explorer crashes, but the next evening it happend again this time the dll recorded was SSCtxMnu.dll and this one belongs to Webroots Spysweeper and it is the latest version. I have not uninstalled it at the moment just stopped it running at start up.

    Both of the programs are reported to be Vista friendly, so what is going on here? Soon I will have nothing installed. I have had Vista since its launch and I do not remember explorer crashing before and I certainly had Spysweeper installed.

    Paul

    I have little verging on no experience of Vista and find it difficult to help you further.
