I am trying to restore the information store in Exchange 5.5 and am unable to. I have an ARCServe 2000 backup. When I restore the information store, the database is inconsistent. The directory starts but the information store doesn't. I have tried the registry hack of going into the 'restore in progress' registry key and changing the values. I have tried isinteg -patch as well as the eseutil with almost all the switches possible and still nothing.

I thought I would be able to run setup, stop the information store and directory, restore, and startup again but it just not working. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any suggestions would be great on how to fix. Please don't comment about not using the products. Thanks in Advance.

If you are restoring your database within ArcServe, you must select the option to start the information store when finished. This tells the Arc Serve Exchange agent that this is the last backup set and to run a consistancy check on the database, then parse the transaction logs and then start the information store. Otherwise the Information store will remain inconsistant waiting on more incremental restores of the information store, which you may or may not have.
You should choose the "start information store on finish" option only on your last restore of the information store.

I do not see an option to start the information store after completion. I am using ARCServe 2000 with SP3 and all the patches. Where is this located?

I got it to work though...just enough to get the mailbox I needed to restore. Although my method is NOT a recovery method. Here were the steps I took ... can someone interject here and tell me a better way???

    1. Installed Exchange 5.5
    2. Installed Service Pack 4
    3. Installed ARCServe 2000
    4. Installed ARCServe Client for Exchange
    5. Create Administrator mailbox in exchange
    6. Tied ARCServe Exchange client to Admin mailbox
    7. Restored Information Store
    8. Followed Microsoft Article Q272570 until step 7. Stopped on Step 6.
    9. Moved MDBData folder (to save restore) and uninstalled Exchange.
    10. Reinstalled Exchange (same as steps 1 and 2 above)
    11. Stopped the Information Store service
    12. Moved MDBData folder back and deleted all files except pub and priv files (only two files left)
    13. Did step #7 in Microsoft Article Q272570. Started Information Store

It is unbulievable what I had to go through to get this to work. Anybody ... am I missing something here? Why can't I just restore it and run it? When I restore originally and try to start the Information Store, I get error 4015 and Event 5000.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    exchange 5.5

I had a similar problem with exchange. In the end I just stopped all exchange services, deleted all files from mdbdata dir, restored the priv and pub edb files, started the exchange dir service. Dropped to dos and went to the exchsrvr/bin dir and ran ISINTEG -PATCH
then went to exchange administrator and went to properties of server, highlight it on right hand side and choose file and properties, choose advanced and then run the consistancy checker, choose whether you want to replicate or not the extra stuff. all now working, (after I started the services again :)) hope this works for you
