I have a cd-rom and cd-rw and with both I get a very loud spinning noise when reading most disks. ( I don't get it with audio cds.) All drivers up to date and all disks cleaned. I searched BBS for similar problems but found no postings. Cd-rom(Acer) is master on onboard ide 2 and Cd-rw(HP) is master on Siig PCI ATA controller. Everything fine in device mgr. and no problems reading disks and running progs. Just excessive spinning and lots of noise drives me nuts. Also, disks are quite hot after use. Ideas? TIA. Happy Holidays.

    HI edward1c

I dont know fer sure about excessive cd spinning ,but have you opend the case cleaned the cpu fan , and with compressed air blown out all the dust especialy around the power supply and fan.

All the heat from inside the case rises up to the cd area

I'd try installing the latest chipset drivers for the motherboard (or reloading the originals).
It may be having trouble reading data from the drives.

Matt, I think you are on the right path with your suggestion. Clearly it is a mobo or OS driven problem as both Cd drives exhibit same problem and they are different makes on totally different, and unrelated, controllers. What, exactly, are "chip set" drivers. My knowledge gets very fuzzy here. The board is a FIC SD 11. It has an AMD 751 northbridge and a Via 686A southbridge. I downloaded Via 4in 1 drivers and a patch for these drivers but I am sure they are already installed. Question: Does the south bridge or north bridge "control" the Ide and/or PCI ATA controllers. I know the Via southbridge controls the audio and video cards. Thanks for any advice here. I am counting the days until an nforce2 IGP board comes on the market and I can flush this hybrid piece of junk. Merry Xmas and happy New Year.

    Hi E

I'm wondering if Windows is not loading the drivers properly or something is corrupt or missing.
This is what I would try.
You can uninstall the Via (IDE) drivers using the 4 in 1 program.
Remove your CD drives and IDE controllers in Device Manager.
Shutdown and change the configuration of drives ie. Master/Slave (some are very fussy about their configuration).
When you boot, go to the BIOS and check what it says about them. Any problems reboot till they are recognised properly.
    Reinstall drivers in Windows.

I've been having a great Xmas, hope you have too.

    Matt

You want to install the latest AMD 751 miniport drivers and the 4.43 Via 4 in 1 drivers, however I'm not sure this is your problem re: spinning drives.

    ;)

Thanks Rockster. Before I uninstall cd drives as Matt suggests I will try new drivers. I can not find the AMD mimiport driver on their web site.I have version 4.45 of 7/99 that came with the board. Where might I get a newer file? I have VIA 4in1 1438 from FIC page but will check Via for later version. Thanks. A side question. When I load MSCDEX/D:MSCD001 /V in auto exec.bat Windows only recognizes the cd drive on D. If I rem this line I get both D and F cd drives. (E is a Zip drive.) What is the syntax to get both drives recognized? TIA.
