Few days ago when PC was restarted, bootup got to desktop with icons, taskbar with basic icons and clock, stopped, blue screen with Fatal Exception occurred at 0E 0028:00000001 - no additional 'address' or details, and the PC was then frozen - this happens every time normal boot is attempted. Will start in safe mode, but of course only basic programmes run.

Are these numbers disk sectors or what? I have found plenty of articles and postings re 0E 0028:xxxxxxxx errors, but they are usually accompanied by stuff about modules, VxD etc. Nothing on this error message - 00000001 sounds pretty fundamental and drastic to me! Any clues about recovering normal function? Or do I just try the Windows Troubleshooter advice and disable all those devices and try adding them one at a time, rebooting each time?

    Thanks.

Paul, I can't answer your question but will follow this one with interest because I was periodically getting the same error on shutdown that I think was caused by drivers associated with an ATI All-In-Wonder Raedon Video card in this particular setup. Could never find an answer and also got an OE 0028: 00000000 error after hiiting Ctr-Alt-Del with the first error message. Spent hours trying to run the cause of this down and was able to duplicate the behavior on two identical machines and one non-identical machine with the same Video cards. Also though it might be memory related.

I switched drivers and am now using the latest Catalyst drivers which seem to have corrected this, but am still not 100% convinced that was the only source of this error message. Note - I did not have this problem with WinxP Pro on the same machine (dual boot) with the same (obviously) hardware - only with 98se.

    ;)

Thanks for the interest - my graphics card is by NVIDIA so don't think there's any problem like yours. If no one knows for sure I guess I'll just hav to try the Troubleshooter method! Paul

    Paul Severs, & Rockster2U,

This Code means the device was not installed properly.

Recommend possibly rechecking to ensure the card is correctly seated in the slot, & use the Nvidia suggested method to reinstall the Drivers.

This means uninstalling the current driver, reinstall Windows VGA Driver, also check for correct version of Direct X, then reinstall the Nvidia Driver.

From my experienc I've had this problem with improper installation of the Drivers. I found when done correctly my machine runs fat Dumb and Happy.
    ;)

    Hope this helps.

OK thanks, I will try that in the next day or two, so long as I can recognise the graphics card and know whether or not it is properly seated! Paul

Thanks for your comments - this tells me there is definately a problem with the drivers that originally shipped with the ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 7500. As mentioned, I was able to reproduce the same results with 3 machines. (some accomplishment, huh?) The new catalyst D/L drivers - updated from the ATI website provided no relief for me either. I wound up purchasing a new set of Catalyst drivers (CD) from ATI and that resolved my problem - again, initial problem was on 98se only, same hardware with XP pro - everything ran flawlessly.

I researched this particular error message for hours and have never been able to turn up anything on it. Thanks.

    ;)

    fatal exception at 0E 0028:00000001

Thanks to those who have so far made suggestions. Several folk I know who use Symantec's Norton AntiVirus have reported errors and in some cases crashes associated with this programme - do others know of an association between NAV and this particular error?

It is worth noting that for a couple of weeks before the big startup freeze and this fatal exception message, at startup we kept getting messages about NAV being unable to start email protection, and occasionally that NAV autostart had not worked. Were these perhaps harbingers of this partiicular doom?

    Paul Severs,
Interesting.........and yes this has been known to happen. In fact I have seen on this forum where some members have stated they won't use Norton.

I wonder if this MS KBA would apply in this case.

(Sorry for the delay in response, I just got back)

    Hope this helps.
