Using Excel 97 on a Windows 2000 laptop. Only recently this problem started. Every time I try to open an Excel file, ANY Excel file, I get the error "A document with the name <> is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name...To open the second document, either close the document that's currently open, or rename one of the documents." Trouble is that I don't have anything else open. And, importantly, these are not network files. They are LOCAL files. There was a similar problem with Word some time ago, which I was able to fix in the registry. Does this have a registry fix, as well?

TIA

Thanks, Pete! it worked like a charm!

I did the following:

For Excel, navigate to the
"My Computer\HKEY_CL@ssES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\shell\Open\command" key.

The default entry should end with ...\excel.exe %1" and the fix is to remove the %1.
