If I have an account number, 001234
    Excel displays it as, 1234

How do I get it to display as 001234?

If you need the format to remain numeric - choose "Custom" (at bottom of Format Cells / Category list. In field to right - enter zeros that correspond to the number of places required. Ex: 000000 in the Custom Filed Format dialog would cause the cell value 123 to appear as 000123. In this way, it retains its ability to be used in formulas etc.
