This problem is confined to Excel, other Office 2003 programs work OK

File > Open or clicking on the File open icon in the toolbar freezes Excel completely. All other functions work correctly until I go File > Open.

The only way of closing it is through Task Manager, where Excel is shown to be running. There are no error messages in Event Viewer.

I have repaired Office - no change.

    I have re-registered Excel.exe - no change.

I have reinstalled Office and updated, again no change.

    Any thoughts?

If push comes to shove I'll install my copy of 2007, but would prefer to stick with 2003 for the time being.

The files are on the same PC - same physical drive, different partition.

Creating a new workbook, closing it and then attempting file > open freezes Excel - Window title bar changes from blue to grey (running Classic Windows on XP) and nothing works. Have to close through Task Manager.

Double clicking any workbook, including the new one in Explorer opens the file in Excel and any command works, except File > Open

Might try Excel's repair option found under Help.
