I think there is a function that will count the existence of a value within a column.

I have a worksheet with names and each has a category denoted by letters A to Z. What I want to find out is how many of each category in the sheet.

Hi, I do not know if /think there is a function for this.
I would set a cell to a hyperlink that calls a query.
    regards

COUNTIF will do it for you. Go into help and look for it. Good instructions there.

The advantage of a query is that you could see any selected row
information for each "hit" as well as the total count. Sometimes with a count the next question you ask is "I wonder what that is/who they are? "
    regards

That is a function of knowing what you want to count. In my case I have a column with single letter data such as A B X F M etc.

I want to count how many of each and I can set the countif into different cells with different criteria: =countif(C1:C100, "B ") and just change the last criterion. == autoupdate !!
