 I'm running XP Home. I'm an avide puter tweaker and always want to go faster with more power!! ( OH OH OH More Power ) :D . Anyway I'm in the middle of trying to tweak out my poor decrepid 56K dial up modem
( because if I had DSL or Cable I wouldn't have anything to do ) and need to hear whats going on with the connection .. I have dug deep , search all sorts of forums, tried all kinds of extra setting for the modem , been in the network connections, internet connections , etc, etc, . And still ---only 2 times did I hear my modem dial ----and no ---I don't know what it was that caused it , because by the time I realized it was doing it , it went away  !!!!I started looking for what did it , but no luck . The modem itself does not have a physical speaker on it . The sound came through the system sound card and out through the speakers . I heard it turn on , get the dial tone , dial and connect like I used to in 98SE( on a different puter ) then sound goes out and connection remains to surf away !!!! Tweaking the modem is much easier when you can hear the type of connection you get . Anyway here are my modem specs and current extra settings if anyone out there can see what I'm missing !!!!

If the sound came through the speakers on your desk and not the PC speaker, check to make sure the line in isn't muted. To do this, double click on the speaker icon in the system tray. In the window that opens make sure there's not a check mark in the mute box under line in. If there is, uncheck it and then try dialing.
