For some reason the folder in the server that everyone shares has switched to 'Read Only' and for the life of me I have no idea why or how.

The 'Read Only' box is checked but the 'check' is gray. If I click on it I can cycle through a gray check, no check, and a black check.

Every time I turn it off, it pops right back on when I open the properties again. Please bare in mind that I am just a Copier Technician and I have little experience with working on servers or the software that goes with them. Somehow I got wrangled into this and after two days of fighting with it you guys are my only hope.

    Thanks in advance.

I figured out what the problem was. Apparently I had to manage the 'Shadow Copies' options. This was the first I had ever messed with something like that but once I set it straight everythign was cool again.

For those who aren't sure how to do that, I'll be glad to share how I managed to solve it.

I'm sure alot of you more experienced types have wrestled once or twice, but man I was lost. Heh.

That might be useful, even if you only supply a link to the relevant information. I hadn't come across an issue of shadow copy altering settings to read-only, so would like to be able to avoid the same problems.

    Alrighty. Here goes.

    1. Go to Admin Tools

    2. Open 'Computer Management'

    3. Right click on 'Shared Folders'

    4. Find 'All Tasks' and select it.

    5. Click 'Configure Shadow Copies'

From ther just configure as you see fit. There is one important thing to note however: The folder will still say 'Read-Only' however all the files inside said folder and respective sub folders will not. You, and those with permission, will be able to edit and save the files normally.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Dave. I'll be checking my server settings when I get back to work on Monday. :)

No sweat, I really hope it helps you. I have to give mad props to our IT gal, she's actually the one who discovered the fix.

Just in case she's reading this... hehe. ;)
