Every time I shut down or reboot my system (XPproSP2), the event log shows a warning for event ID 1517: "Windows saved user's registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off... This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account. "

Task Manager shows only my applications and explorer.exe running under my user name; the other processes (including my antivirus) are run under System or Local Service or Network Service.

I'd really like to know what's going on at shutdown (it's not horrible, but it is a persistent error and maybe it can be fixed). Can someone please explain for me?

[Perhaps coincidentally, Registry First Aid always finds about ten invalid references; in the registry, the incorrect references are to LocalService and the correction changes them to my username. Is this possibly related?]

My installation of XP is only two weeks old, and everything else (I'm almost afraid to say) is working perfectly.

    Hello D_Spider,

Try RFA not fixing these entries, and see if that resolves the shutdown issue.

If it does, then exclude those entries in RFA.

    Regards - Charles

Marty's post provides the fix for those error reports.

    Thanks, Charles, Marty, & Pete,

I'll go and get the file.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner--my email address is new and I forgot to change it in my User CP.

    All's well!

The UPHC (now running as a service) has eliminated all those "registry still in use" errors.
    Thanks again!

Good news :) No idea why MS did not incorporate that 'fix' in the OS.

I wonder if this problem is any kind of carry-over from a recent patch? I encountered the same situation (1517 error - usernv) about 4-5 days ago and found the UPH Cleaner from the same link. After installing it, my problem was similarly resolved. Never heard of this tool before that but it sure did the trick.

    ;)

I think not - this error cropped up on my computer over 2 years ago and was resolved with this applet.

The Readme.txt has detail of the why's and wherefore's.

    PeteC, Rockster2U, et all:
I remember running in to that same scenario a few years ago and as Pete says it was resolved with that applet, (in my PC too).
