I think this error started after I installed updates for Net Framework.

I get this event every time I try to open a chm help file. Is there a fix for this?

    I installed 896358 15 Jan 05
and 890175 2 Aug 05 according to my control panel.

Wouldn't you think I would have had a problem before now??

From the look of it, only navigation to the web is cancelled to plug a security
hole. Likely that if all the help info is in your local .chm file then it would display normally. Or is this happening no matter what .chm you look at?

    Just for chuckles

Just for chuckles I would download and install HTML Help Workshop from MS.
It's free and it should have html help activex control and the other exe files before the fix was stuck on 'em. Also you might have fun creating your own .chm help files. :) It's mostly just authoring .html pages and compiling 'em together.

    This worked:

    6:13 PM 1/15/2006

You were probably bitten by a new form of security block that can be baffling the first time you encounter it. You may download a file OK, and it even may seem to run OK, at first, when you click on it. But then you get an unexpected result, such as a "no topics found" message in a helpfile when you *know* there's data in there.

The solution is to right click on the files in question, select Properties, and then select Unblock (which will only appear as an option if the files were blocked in the first place).

That's why the Archives download pages include this note:

SECURITY NOTE: YOUR OS MAY "BLOCK" THIS FILE AND PREVENT PROPER OPERATION WHEN YOU TRY TO RUN IT. (It may seem to run, but return "no topics found," as if the files were empty.) If you experience this or similar trouble when using the Helpfile, right click on the files you just unzipped, one by one; select properties, and then select UNBLOCK.

In any case, if you have trouble with downloaded files, remember this trick, and explore the right-click/Properties sheet for the downloaded files to see if the files' content is being "blocked. "

    thanks for the info

Thanks for the info Alicia. I'm thinking now the next time I install a development environment I'll probably only have to click on about 2048 help pages and unblock 'em!!! Doing everything through the GUI is cool when it's ones or twos. When it gets over a hundred that's when you get carpal tunnel syndrome!! :)
