I am using Windows 98SE I have been doing some research and something just doesn't make sense to me. From a clean boot, nothing open except what is in the tray,Zone alarm, temperature, Go Back, AVG anti virus, and my icon for the uninteruptable power supply I have 85% free resources. For me, that is excellent. As soon as I open Eudora, it drops to 42% nothing else on. From a clean reboot and open netscape I have 77% open,Explorer 75% open, outlook express 72% open, opera 53% open. If I open Opera,Explorer, and Netscape it is 47% free. What is wrong with Eudora.? When I tried to open that also, I was told not enough resources. Any answers?

Eudora's resource usage has been an issue for quite some time. Have a look here. If you search further you'll find plenty of other similar threads ... as well as one or two suggestions as to "tweaks" that may help.

Yes. I agree. Euduora is a high resource user.

But its benifits OUT WEIGHT that BY FAR.

If it is on a partition other then C: and addresses are stored as Eudora nicknames OE can go completely to hello and it has no effect on Eudora at all. It DOES NOT rely on Windows address book which is a HUGH advantage of it.

Out side of a couple of files, it is 98% standalone. The version of Windows has no effect on it. I have the exact same Eudora folder that I was using for Win95. And has not been changed at all. ( other then Dial-up to LAN connection )

Also ( at this time ) it is a little more bullet proof than OE.

I have three machines and none of them even have OE or Outlook installed,

85% down to 42% does seem way too much though. Mine only uses about 16%

    Good Morning.

I did do a little experimenting and found that how many resources Eudora uses may well depend on what I have run prior to it. One time it used 10% and another it used 16%. But never more than 16%

Keeping resource problems to a minimum ( or none ) is why I do not try to run more than one thing at a time. I use it and then shut it down. I have found by doing this it does keep resources at a higher level and also keeps software conflicts down.

Another thing I have noticed about Eudora is that when you run it for the first time it my take 16% but only give back 14%. But on the other hand when you go to use it agian it is right there ( in the same session ) quickly and only use the 14% that it gave back after the first run and gives back the 14%.

But I still feel that advantages of it far out weigh the resource usage.

I can gaurrentee that you will not use the same version of OE in any version of Windows or IE. I have changed Windows several times and have not lost an address or e-mail.

I have had to re-install it in order to get it registered ( in the Windows Registry ) so that it would work properly. But it went right back into the existing folder.

BillyBob, I too noticed the resourse thing. Often a clean reboot solves a lot of problems. My situation is complicated by the streaming audio that is on all day here. It uses up resources too.

Oh Yes. Things like that will eat up resources. And as you say with no recourse other than reboot.

Also some Screensavers ( and other poorly written programs ) will do the same thing. They eat up resources but do not release them.

At least you have a fairly good idea as to why your resources get low. And by knowing that you also know what you may have to do to control them.

When it come to Windows, what we would like to do and what Windows will allow us to do can be quite different. And sometimes very frustrating.

But when it comes to resources it is pretty much up to the user to control them. Because Windows is sure as heck no help in that area.

Here's the "fix" according to Qualcomm. I have, however, read numerous accounts of memory issues persisting even after these steps have been followed.

I replaced Eudora with The Bat! quite some time ago (even though I wasn't experiencing any problems with the former) and l've stuck with it ever since. Well worthy of a look if you wish to consider an alternative.

I had a go at The Bat.

Looks pretty good. I see it only uses 6% and gives 6% back. I like that. And a one heck of a lot less disk space.

It took me a bit to get it to send mail as I tried use the imported Eudora Nicknames. But once I figured that out it works pretty well

But how do you turn off the HTML message part ?

Is it pretty much standalone or is it tied to Windows or IE.

And would I be able to keep it as I do Eudora if I have to wipe out Windows.

BB - you'll find this option under - Options - Preferences - General. TB! takes a little getting used to - the layout and locations of some of the options are somewhat different to what you would generally expect! It is worth the effort though!

You'll probably find this link of help - particularly this section which deals with macros (which are probably one of TB!'s best features but can take a little time to learn).

That was a dirty trick - you edited in more questions whilst I was responding ;)

TB! is more independent of the OS than Eudora. Whilst neither rely on the WAB, Eudora does, by default, make use of the Windows Viewer which TB! does not (it has its own).

Yup. Everything can be exported/backed-up. Check out the Help File.

:D I just love playing dirty tricks :D

    Thank you.

That is what I want. The less dependent on Windows I can get the better I like it.

I think as soon as I can come up with the few extra $$ Eudora may just maintain a spot for Backup use only.

    Thanks again
