etrnd.exe [HJT log]

    Hello out there in BBS land. =)

    I've searched far and wide. Up and down. Inside and out. But I cannot find anything about a process in my task manager called "etrnd.exe ". :confused:

    If anyone can shed some light on this process, I would appreciate it so much. When I'm having problems with my pc hangining, if I end task that process my computer goes along just fine. But it's like "the cat came back" and it shows up again moments later. I'm assuming it's a virus...but even then I don't know what to do with it.

    Help?! :D

    jt4jc - Welcome to the Board :)

    I can find no meaningful reference to etrnd.exe on Google ....

    Couple of points ....

    Start > Run > type in msconfig > OK. Look in the Start up tab - is it there? If so disable it by clearing the check box.

    Download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature, save it to a folder on your hard drive not to the desktop or a temp location, run it and post the log here.

    I ran msconfig and it wasn't in the startup. =( However, I did run the HijackThis program and here's the log (I used red where I found etrnd.exe [1 occurance]):

    Even to my inexperienced HJT log eye you have a few problems :( I am no expert at these logs and ask you to be patient until one of the members more familiar with HJT logs happens along.

    Sorry to see that you have had no responses - I have delved a little deeper into a couple of aspects of your log ....

    O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\etls.dll

    According to here etls.dll is 'safe' and is from a company called e-Trends . It is but a short step to deduce that there is a strong possibility that etrnd.exe is related to that company.

    Does the info on the two relevant hits on the Google search mean anything to you?

    I would be inclined to rename c:\windows\system32\etrnd.exe to c:\windows\system32\etrndold.exe and then run HijackThis again and mark the following for deletion ....

    Hi PeteC,

    Interestingly enough, as I was having a conversation with my wife about the computer issues I am working on she specifically asked if I deleted the e-trends program. I guess it's a marketing company that pays you $5 a month to monitor your internet usage. She purposely d/l the program and installed it. So I guess it stays in the computer or I stay on the couch. =)

    I ran another program called lspfix to take care of:
    O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'xfire_lsp_10650.dll' missing

    I deleted the rest. Except for the:

    O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\etls.dll

    Now that I know it's a part of something installed for a legit purpose, should I still do the "etlsold.dll" and mark the rest for deletion? It would seem logical to do so since there shouldn't be that many dynamic lib links with the same name. But just wanting to make sure. I guess I could run it and fix it back if it doesn't work.

    Unless you want to stay on the couch leave etrnd.exe well alone :) I am reasonably certain that it is an/the executable for e-Trends and these are clearly connected with e-Trends too ...
    so let them be as well.

    I don't understand why there are 5 entries for the same .dll, so you could fix 4 of them through HJT and see if the program still works - knowing that you have a backup if all goes pear shaped.

    I know nothing about e-Trends, but it seems likely that it the cause of your problems with the computer hanging - as noted in your first post ending the process cures the problem. On that basis you could uninstall the software, scan again with HJT to see if the 010's noted above have gone (if not 'fix' them in HJT) and then reload the software.
