Have a problem with my motherboard/ethernet controller. the mainboard is an msi 865pe Neo2 -P. I have visitied the msi site but doesn't appear to help. I have a belkin router/adsl and I can't connect to it. The new hardwae wizzrd asks me to install software for my ethernet controller but I can't find what make/model it is. When I bough the mainboard I think it was a realtek gigabit but there are no downloads for that on the MSI site. How do I find out what type of ethernet controller it is?

    Thanks in advance, as always.
    Ron.

According to this MSI page, that board uses Intel 10/100 Ethernet Drivers. A link to download those drivers...and others for that motherboard...are on that page.

If those don't work, download Belarc Advisor and put it on a floppy or burn it to CD. Then run it on the computer with the problems.

It will inventory the system and report everything, hardware and software, it finds. Hopefully, it can identify the network adapter (also called "ethernet adapter," "network card" and "NIC ").

Tnaks Miz but there's the problem. Belarc isn't showing any network cards and the MSI manual that came with the board references realtek and the msi site only shows downloads for Intel. Will intel drivers work?

It won't hurt to try the Intel drivers? Did you get a CD with the motherboard? The NIC drivers should be on that.

If all else fails, you might find the easiest solution would be to buy a new NIC card and install that. A 10/100 NIC would be fine for connecting to an ADSL line.

Still not fixed. I took the advice of buying a new network adapter card but that's not the issue. The PC is talking to the adsl/router as the orange light is on etc. But when I go into device manager i still have the same problem that the ethernet controller driver is not installed. I have downloaded the drivers from the realtek site but still the same problem exists. Device Manager is aslo telling m the drivers for mutimedia controller are missing too!

I am running XP Home and connecting to a Belkin router/adsl. It's the COntroler not the Adapter that seems to be the problem

The orange LED is part of the network card hardware. It being lit tells you that your network card is seeing the connection to the network via the cable.

The problem is that your operating system is not seeing the network card. This is most likely a driver issue (outside chance it is a hardware fault or a windows fault). I don't think you have the right driver. It might be worth having a look at the motherboard itself and checking that you have the right model number, and also seeing if you can spot any information about the NIC chipset on the board itself.

The reason a new NIC would over come the problem is that you would have a compatible pairing of hardware to drivers. It's a fudge, but as they are so cheap, it might save you a lot of messing around.
