Resolved ethernet not recognised

o/s windows xp

I can't connect to broadband. Cable is fine and broadband works with this connection on my laptop.

In device manager I have yellow exclamation marks under ethernet controller and I'm instructed to reinstall the drivers. I have all the original disks from Dell and have tried to install the drivers from these disks but when I go to install from any of the disks (I'm not sure which of these disks contains the driver), the installer cannot find the driver.

I've downloaded a free driver which is apparently compatible (Realtek Ethernet PCI NIC Driver) but still nothing.

Any ideas?

 

thanks, I've installed the driver (Broadcom® 440x 10/100 Integrated Ethernet Controller driver for Microsoft® Windows® XP) but still no connection and the same exclamation mark in device manager. I've tried installing the driver from the device manager but it doesn't recognise a driver as being installed?
