Recently I've been getting a lot of the same message: "ESP NT System Service Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close... "
The error notice wants to send a report to Microsoft and I permit it. I never get any response telling me why I have the error. I have searched on line for information about what I can do to stop getting the error and can find nothing. Can anyone tell me why I am getting the error and what to do about it?

    Request Admin Reply

I posted this thread about 5 days ago and ADMIN asked what Version Windows I have. I responded with "Windows XP Media Center Edition SP 2 ". It is also Version 5.1. I was hoping to hear back from ADMIN because it seemed he might have a solution.

Well, I'm not sure what he was on his mind as far as a fix for you goes but, Arie is travelling at this time and said he wouldn't be able to check in here for a few days. So, if nobody else comes up with an answer for you, be patient. I don't know how long it will be but Arie will be checking in here eventually. My guess is that it won't be long.

What are you doing when you get the error message?

Thanks for the reply, Zander. When I get the error message, it asks if I want to send a report or not. I sent several reports with no response from MS, so now I do not send reports. I close the error message and continue with what I was doing. The problem that was encountered has no noticeable effect. It seems to occur more often as I try to open a new site such as when I try to download something, like an update or other file. I might see it two or three times as I click down through the links.

I did some searching on this error and I didn't find much. There's a few hits on it at Google but with the exception of one, they were all unresolved. The one that fixed it used system restore. I don't know if that's an acceptable option for you or not.

Also, I saw your other post about keyboard problems in IE. I hesitate to get into it here as it's not a good idea to be working on the same problem in two different threads. But, if this error message occurs in IE is it possible the two problems could be related? Maybe spyware of some type or an add-on could be causing the problem(s).

So, try starting IE without any add-ons and then use it for a bit to see if the problems are still there or not. To start it without any add-ons, right click on the IE icon on the desktop and select "start without add-ons" from the menu. If you don't have the IE icon showing on the desktop, Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) will get you there too. Let us know if this fixes the problem or not. If so, we can start disabling some of them to try to isolate the problem one.

OOPS! I never gave this any thought. What version of IE are you using? If IE7 my suggestion for starting without add-ons will work. If you're still using IE6, you won't have that option.

I am using IE 7. Please tell me a little more about starting without the add-ons. I didn't see your suggestion. Thanks for responding.

ESP NT System Service Launcher is not a native MCE or XP service. I am not sure what it is, it could be legitimate or not.

    Start, Run, eventvwr.msc
Look in the System Log for an occurance of this notice being thrown. Double click to expand it, and report back to the Forum what you find. In particular, I need the information noted as "Source:" and "Error ID: "

If not found in the System Log, check other Logs.

Also, follow these instructions and send that information back to the forum:
    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Open Notepad > Click on Format > Uncheck Word wrap, if checked.
    • Double-click on the desktop icon for HJTsetup.exe.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
    • Continue to click Run/Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and HijackThis (HT) will launch.
    • Close any/all browser, messenger, mediaplayer, Office and mail client windows and applications.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button; HT will then scan and a log showing the results should open in notepad.
    • Click on Edit > Select All (or CTRL+A) then click on Edit > Copy (or CTRL+C) to copy the contents of the log to your clipboard.
    • Open a reply to this thread and paste (CTRL+V) the log into your reply.
    • Make certain you post the entire log, please.

If you send that information back to the Forum I promise to help you to resolve this while Arie is away.

Zander...I think you have put me onto something.

I disabled the add-ons as per your instructions in post # 7. No ill effects; no error message in several attempts; no keystroke problems. I've been typing this at my regular pace with no dropped characters.

I will try this (IE without add-ons) for a few days and then get back to you. Next thing will be to try to figure out which add-on(s) were giving me fits. I'll ask for help with working through that problem in a few days.

    Thanks again.

    Question for wmergen

    wmergen,
I have a question for you. I see you're in Chesapeake, VA. So am I, I'm assuming you use Cox for your internet? If so, do you have the security package installed? Reason I ask, I recently installed the security package and I am now also getting this same error. There's nothing that I can pinpoint as to when it's going to happen and in reviewing my system logs I can't see anything out of the ordinary that would seem to cause it.
I do know that the only way I can get my system back to normal once it happens is to shut it down and restart.
Just curious about that and if it's a Cox issue, not a system issue.
    Thanks.

Zander pointed me in the right direction and I looked further to find that this ESP NT thing was brought into my system by Authentium, who write the Cox High Speed Internet Security Suite software which I use. I went to Authentium's site and under support I found an area called "Ask a Question ". When I clicked on that, I found a list of questions already asked which included my problem: No. 12 on the list of 350: ESP NT System Source...etc. When I clicked on the question, Authentium spelled out what it was and gave four different sites to go to to download the necessary "fixes ". Number 1 was to update Windows software; then number 2, and so on. I did each update in the order listed by simply clicking on each link. I have not had the error occur in over three days.

Thanks Zander, and I hope this will help the others out there that have the problem.

Go to this link to find the list of questions I referred to:

Mr. Castner: I did not ignore your comments and I appreciate them. I am copying them and noting them for future use. However, by the time I saw them I had already found the information as I posted a few minutes ago. I tried your first step (eventvwr.msc), and I suppose because of my inexperience, I couldn't find the error I mentioned in the list of several thousand events that were listed there. Thanks again for your offer to help.

    ESP NT System Source Launcer

Don't get your hopes too high. I was doing fine for several days, then yesterday the same error started popping up again. I've seen it three times in two days. At least now, I know where it is coming from so I'll be giving a call to Cox and, if necessary, Authentium. If they come up with some answers, I'll try to pass them along.
    Good Luck, LPABF.

I'm glad I didn't because it didn't last long for me either. I've also been getting the BSD that also leads back to this program. If I didn't have a 12 year old that gets on this computer I would remove the whole mess. I guess I'll check their site and see if there's any mention of it, I can't believe this wouldn't be a known problem. And if nothing is there then I'll have to call them. Let me know also if you come up with anything new.

If you don't find a fix for this, perhaps you should try disabling IE's add-ons a few at at time to see if you can figure out which one is causing it. Click tools>internet options>programs and then click on the manage add-ons button. You can disable them there. If you disable a few and the error still occurs, re-enable those and disable a few more. When the error quits, you'll know it's one of those that are currently disabled. Then it's just a matter of re-enabling them one or two at time until the error occurs again. Process of elimination.

You could then leave it disabled until you find an answer to this. If you find out which one it is, it would be nice if you'd let us know. It may help somebody else. Also, it would be something I could look into a bit further.
