Just a small irritation really; I have Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3 set as my default browser, and everything runs fine except in a few instances when I click to open an internet link from within a program. I get a windows error message popping up saying something along the lines of 'Windows cannot find http:\\<link> . Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

The thing is, the link opens fine in Firefox, I just have to close the error message every time. An example of when this happens is after I've run a benchmark test in 3dmark and click for the online results browser, but it has happened elsewhere too. I've tried setting I.E as the default browser and the error message stops, but returns as soon as I make Firefox default again

Im running XP Pro SP1 fully patched.

    Thanks for any ideas

    Welcome to the Forum, danswan!

    Hi danswan,

That's a new problem to me, altho I don't run Firefox, I do have it installed, but I've never experienced what you're describing. Are you by chance using a Theme other than the default? Curious that making IE default stops the error.

    Open Windows Explorer
Click on View | Folder Options
Click on the File Types Tab
Scroll down to URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol
Click on Edit and once again click on Edit

What program is listed? It should be Firefox.

    Thanks for the reply

I'm not using any other themes, just the default one, and Firefox is indeed listed under URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol

    Any other ideas?

    Hi danswan,

Can you give me some links where this happens and I'll try them with FF, and see what happens.

    Thanks!

I've investigated further and I have discovered this happens whenever I click any link from outside firefox. All my favorites work finewhen the browser is open but if I make a shortcut on my desktop to any web address and double click it, I get the error message.

I also get this message if I enable Favorites view in my start menu, as soon as I click any link I get this error

Like I say, it's not too much of an inconvienience because all I have to do i click 'OK' on the error message as the page actually opens fine in Firefox. I just want to understand why it happens, and hopefully learn how to stop it.

So dont think theres any point sending you any of these links Ramona, as I know they will work fine for you.

Incidentally, I have used Firefox before on this system with no problems, it only started happening after my last format.

    Hi danswan

This is a reported Bugzilla Bug 246078.
Came across a solution via FF extension deskCut
(this extension adds desktop shortcut creation to the context-menu (works nice, try it.)
Look under "Known Bugs" header, which relates to your problem.
For a SOLUTION - See the registry download fix here ... under " File Download" header (file name .. firefox_bug_246078_rev3.reg), with istallation instructions below it. Fixed it on my computer / FF. :D
