Hi all, I'm getting an error message when trying to add a client Pc (Windows Xp) to a domain. Here's my situation...

I have only one computer and I am using microsoft virtual server. Windows server 2003 is installed physically (and is the Domain Controller) and Windows Xp is installed on the virtual drive. I created a computer object called "client01" on the domain controller and then tried to join the domain but I am getting an error. I configured the Local Area Connection to get a static local IP. I also configured two static DNS servers ( I got them from my ISP).

Is there anything I'm not doing right?

    This is the error message...

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain contoso.com:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
    (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.contoso.com

Common causes of this error include the following:

    - The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

    - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

    contoso.com
    com
    .. (the root zone)

    Thanks in advance

I'm not sure how much help you think we will be without the actual text of the error.

It looked like a DNS issue but I didn't suggest it because you looked like you had that under control.
    What was the exact problem?

    External DNS maybe

I was using the 2 DNS servers my ISP gave me. I changed those to the internal DNS 192.168.2.1. Now I could ping the domain. Then I tried joining the domain by its NETBIOS name and it worked ! BUT now I am getting a different issue....When the client Pc successfully joined the domain it had to restart for the changes to take affect. The login screen is different now...you have to press CTRL-ALT-DELETE but when I do that I get the server 2003 task manager (remember I am using virtual server). I cant login in the client Pc anymore ! Any advice would be most appreciated...
