Hi, when I start up my computer a balloon pops up next to the clock that says, "Your computer's screen resolution and color depth are currently set to very low levels. You can get a better picture by increasing these settings. To do this, click the balloon. "
My pc had a resolution of 1024 x 768 and 32 bit color quality early, now its at 640 x 480 and 16 bit and I can't change it. When I click the balloon it asks if I want windows to restor my settings, when I push it it does not do anything.
So, did I delet a driver or something, or can anyone help me with this problem?

    Thanks.
    One year old PC
    WIN XP
    256 RAM
    2.7 P4

Right click on a blank area of your desktop. Select "properties" then choose the settings tab. You should be able to adjust your screen resolution with the slider, there.

If you find you can't change the resolution or color depth in Display Properties, the next step is to reinstall the video drivers.

Right click on My Computer, left click on Properties. Click on the Hardware tab, then on the Device Manager button. Expand the Display Adapter category by left clicking on the plus sign to its left. If the adapter listed is "Standard VGA" then the video drivers have gone south. Double click on whatever is listed, go to the Drivers tab. Click on the Update Drivers button, step through the wizard and see if Windows can find and reinstall the correct drivers for your video card.

Please post back here with the results.

    Thanks for replying.

I tried that earlyer and I just tried again, when I go through the wizard it says "Cannot Continue the Hardware Update Wizard. "

"The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed. "

And the driver is - Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

    Driver update: 11/20/2003

Repeat above steps and uninstall the current display adapter, then reboot and let windows detect the new hardware and load drivers.

Ok, I uninstalled the driver then did a restart. When Windows starts up I get that balloon still and it trys to install that same driver I just uninstalled but it says something about WinXP has not checked to see if its compatible with my OS or not, so I clicked cancel and it tried installing another driver, it was Video Controller (VGA Compatible), but it did not work.

For the benefit of others reading this post, could you elaborate a little on
    What exactly did you do?

I right clicked on My Computer, clicked on the "Hardware" tab and went to Device Manager. Then I double clicked on "Display Adapters ", right clicked on the driver that was in there, went to "Properties" then went to the "Driver" tab and then updated my driver by clicking "Update Driver ".

When I tried yesterday it would try and reinstall some other driver that wasent working. Then a screen popped up saying it might not be accepted by my OS and when I clicked cancel it tried installing another driver but failed.

I restarted it a few times over a day or so and when I tryed again it fix right.

Thanks for posting back that Miz gave you a solution that worked. Glad everything is working now, too!
