My system is a Toshiba Tecra laptop running Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 5.5. My printer is a Canon CFX-L4500 IF, which has Multipass Desktop Manager running in the background to do printing and faxing.

Occasionally, when I try to print from a Website that is heavy with graphics (driving directions from Mapquest, for example), I get the following error message:

"There was an error printing to LPT1: for the printer (Canon CFX-L4500IF Printer):
There was a problem printing to the port.
Check to make sure your printer is configured to use a valid port. "

This error occurs whether I try to print from the Website while on line, or after saving the Website, logging off the Internet, and bringing the Webside back up in offline mode. Once I get the error, I cannot print anything until I reboot.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

    Rancher,

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I selected that option, but it did not help. I also tried increasing the timeout settings in the Properties tab for my printer, but that did not help either. Finally, I downloaded the updates for Internet Explorer 5.5, but that did not help either.

I did notice one thing. After the first error message, which I typed out in my original post, I tried to print from both Internet Explorer and other programs. In either case, I get the following error message:

"There was an error writing to LPT1: for the printer (Canon CFX-L4500IF Printer):
Cannot access the port. It may be in use by another program.
Quit other programs and try printing again. "

After rebooting, I can print normally again until I try a graphics-heavy file again.

Any other suggestions? Should I try Internet Explorer 6.0?

    Thanks!

Ah Ha....printer prolly got to many tmp in the spool. Can you navigate to windows explorer? C:\windows\temp & select them tons of tmp files, ctrl+a, & delete them. Reboot.
Now when you are on a web page heavy with grafics, some of these have "containers" so ta speak so its not to be printed easily. Look for the text "printer friendly" & click that to print from. Finally!! When you can't find this printer friendly option, you can press the "print screen" key on keyboard, then open your fav viewer, such as irfanview, & select edit then paste. Your picture is there. Now file/save as & name it blah blah.jpg & savein where ever your picture folder is. There is another way too but lets not get bogged down here, eh:D

    Rancher,

Thanks for your additional suggestions. There were no .tmp files, and using the "printer friendly" versions of the Websites did not change anything. Using Irfanview or another program to view the Websites offline does work, but seems a lot of trouble to go through.

Finally I downloaded Netscape 6.2 and Internet Explorer 6.0. Both of them worked, with no problem. So I guess it was a problem with Internet Explorer 5.5, or at least with the copy of it on my system.

    Thanks again for your assistance.

That is rather extreme treatment:D But, whatever works, eh?
    Musta had a botched ie5.5??
Another trick ya might play with while in ie6 is; Select the area on a web page you want to print (hi-lite) then click File/print and check "Selected Area "! This is really a kewl feature:cool:
How are things in Milbrae? I used to work there & around Larkspur:)
