I was doiung a reinstall when I had an emergency and had to shut off the computer before it finished. when I got back to it, all I get is an error message that says, The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. windows installation cannot proceed to install windows, click on ok to restart computer and then restart the installion. Well I did that about 20 times but the message keeps coming up. can,t get rid of it.

Sounds like you need to delete C drive, reformat, and start (the installation) all over again.

Hi bebuzz68. Sounds like your Windows install got corrupt due to shutting off the machine during the installation process.

Try booting back into the Windows 8 setup, formatting the drive and starting the installation over from scratch.

Evan, couldn't bebuzz68 have left the computer unattended (during the emergency) instead of shutting it off?

Yeah of course. I don't see why the computer had to be switched off during the install process.

HP Support US. 800-474-6836. Have you product number and serial number ready for the support tech. I was looking at your service manual and then your driver download page. You can usually order them right there but I didn't se them listed either.

I take it that you didn't create a set of backup discs after you purchased your computer?

I don't know about HP, but Dell only sends out an operating system disc if you lose access to your recovery partition; along with some necessary drivers, too. If necessary, it's possible that you can download any third-party software straight from HP's web site. I know Dell offers it.

EDIT: Check this link out and see if any of the recovery options apply to you...

Did you manually shut down the comp or was it an outage due to the storm?
Without a surge protector you may have power pack troubles.
Does it run with original Hard drive installed as I think you were trying to install another HD?? Neil.

In case you can't order recovery disks or access the recovery partition for whatever reason to reinstall Windows 8, you can download the Windows 8.1 iso file and burn it to a flash drive or a DVD and install Windows 8 that way.

See here, How to download the official Microsoft Windows 8.1 ISO.

James HP will let you order the recovery disks if they are available. It's up to bebuzz68 to call the number I provided.

You mean they offer the whole set (the same info that's on the recovery partition)?

That would be great if they did.

    Dell does not.
