On or about 12/22/01, just about every time since then, when I try to print anything in any application, I can print, but either before, after, or both, I get an error message, that reads like this:
"Hpfvls06 - An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click IGNORE & save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click CLOSE. You will lose any information you entered since your last save." When I click IGNORE or CLOSE, I can still print, but not before getting another error-illegal operation-same name-Hpfvls06. I tried updating my printer drivers, & now I get the same thing, but it reads Hpfvls14 instead of Hpfvls06. I've been back & forth with Gateway Smart Site e-mail support, & they can't or won't help, claim it's not their problem. I can't find anything about it on HP's website either. I have a HP Deskjet 722C printer. I upgraded the default drivers(version 10.1) to (10.3) I'm running Windows 98. Please Help.
I just got done formatting the system 2x in Dec. for other problems, then had it redone a 3rd time at the Gateway store, & still the problem persists. It's very annoying.

Try turning off bidirectional communication. For instructions on how to do so (and a couple of other things you can try) go here . I have run into this twice before and the bidirectional communication was the culprit both time. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your response. I believe I already tried that, but a different way, if it's the same thing, & nothing changed, but I can try it again the way you showed. I went to: start/settings/printers/deskjet720Cv.10.3/properties/details/spool settings/disable bidirectional support for this printer.
I also tried the end task on cpr for every program except explorer & systray, & nothing changed. I also checked in System Information, under: Components/Miscellaneous/HP Deskjet Series
shows: Driver Not Installed. I also checked under: Components/Printing: shows Unidriver(UNIDRV.DLL) & Gen drv(GENDRV.DLL) Both: Not Installed. I don't know what any of this means, but it would seem to me that this doesn't sound right, even though Gateway Smart Site e-mail support says that every device doesn't need every driver. I even tried Dr. Watson, which I thought is supposed to help me diagnose this kind of stuff, but all it says when I encounter a problem & try to get a snapshot, is Nothing unusual has happened. Huh? Like illegal operations & error messages aren't unusual. The thing that bugs me is that I didn't have this, then all of a sudden, I can't even get rid of it after 3 reformat & reloads. There must be a way to fix this.
I'd appreciate any help you can give me to help me solve this very annoying problem.

metalpunk-I know you said you tried the HP site with no luck and I find it kind of hard and aggravating to navigate their site, but did you try here: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/eschome.html Seems as tho the info is there-just hard to find(for me, anyway).

Thanks for responding to my post. That looked to be a different new way to get to where I've already been. I ultimately got to troubleshooting error messages & general protection faults, which I've already printed & tried some of the techniques therein. I'm probably going to try more when I have a chance, & some of my own. Yesterday I had the same thing, but had reconfigured my windows guardian, a component which is apparently a part of the Help Spot, a Gateway computers type of problem finding/solving(in some case) program. It came up with a dialog box, in which I clicked Autofix, but it didn't seem to do anything, except get the print document(s) stuck in queue. I canceled printing, purged the documents, then restarted the computer to clear. Then at least I was back where I started. When I went to print the same e-mail I was trying to print again, this time it printed, but like I said it does that too sometimes. This problem's somewhat intermittent, but not very, as it happens just about all the time, but there are those rare instances where it actually prints without this error or problem. There was another option, which I'll try the next time I get this Windows Guardian dialog box, which supposedly allows me to find the fix on the internet, if/when I check this little box. It'll be interesting to see where that takes me, because it's my bet that it'll take me to the place where I've already been, numerous times, & as usual, found everything but what I was looking for, a Fix to MY Problem. But there's only 1 way to find out. I'm referring of course to the HP website. That's my guess anyway. I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. When I did follow the link you sent me, it also had a section just for Deskjet722C printers like mine, but the problems weren't the same as what I'm having, & they even suggested a different driver, a universal 550 or something, but then had a note that it won't work for mine. See what I mean? Help!

I finally got to try the alternate method of turning off the bidirectional communication features, & can seem to print without errors in several applications, so maybe the problem's solved, at least it looks like maybe it is, for now anyway, so Thanks to those of you who responded to my post & tried to help me out. I really appreciate it. :D
