Error message when opening Internet Explorer

I have several browsers (Firefox, Opera, Navigator) that work fine, but Intenet Explorer does not--and hasn't done so since April. I suspect the problem might be linked to an error message I started to receive in April when I boot my computer. This is the message that appears every time I boot: "There has been a network error. The update document is not available. "

When I open Internet Explorer (ver. 6.0), I get a "cannot find server" message along with "the page cannot be displayed" message.

Let me emphasize that IE worked fine prior to then, and I did not change any of its settings. Also, there are no problems with the other browsers. I connect to the Internet via DSL and am using XP SP1 (a year or so ago when I tried to install SP2, I had a lot of problems--so please don't recommend that).

Please note that I've also tried to reinstall IE 6.0, but I get this message: "Setup has detected a newer version of IE already on your system" and I am prevented from reinstalling. I have confirmed, however, that my current, nonworking IE is 6.0. I do not know how to uninstall it so that I can reinstall.

    Suggestions?

    You're welcome Bill.

This should work if you are still using XP with SP1. It will NOT work with later versions, in case anyone is tempted to try it.

    Please post back your results.

PS. If you need to DL IE6 SP1, get it here.

    Thanks

Thanks, again, superdude2. It may take me a few days before I can make the changes--I had to devote today to other duties. And I do have IE 6.0 already, but thanks for the link.

    Success!

I successfully re-installed Internet Explorer 6.0, and things appear to be working fine now. Thank you for your great advice, surferdude2.
