I recently loaded the Vista upgrade on my new Dell computer. When attempting to open an email attachment with the .jpg extension I get the following error message:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. "
Would someone tell me how to do this. Thank you!

    Hello Mrs G and welcome,

    Are you using Outlook Express?

Can you save the attachment(s) to your hard drive and open it there? If you haven't tried that, please do. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer - called Windows Photo Gallery in Vista - may have lost the file association to .jpg extensions, openning the pictures on the hard drive may fix it.

While we're at it, can you open any .jpg already on the hard drive?

Do you have anti virus software installed?

Are you sure this is a JPG picture?

I tried to save it but it went into my Kodak Easy Share with the .jpg extension and am still unable to open it. I cannot open any of my pictures -- all have .jpg. I am now using Windows Mail per a Dell Vista technical support person. How do I get rid of the Kodak and use the Windows Photo Gallery instead? Thank you Charles!

    HI MRS G,
Ok, lets see if we can associate .jpg with Windows Gallery.

First if you don't now, change the Control Panel view to Classic.

Go into Control Panel > Default programs > Set Associations.

You'll see the file extensions and their current program. To change the program, highlight the line and click on the Change Program bar.

In your case, highlight the .jpg and change the program to Windows Gallery.

Thank you!! I think that solved that problem. Glad to know I have such a great resource to turn to for my next problem!
