OK. First things first. I am writing this from the problem machine

AV and Spyware checks have been run with nothing found.

This all started the other night when my Wife and I were playing Links 2003 Golf between her 98SE and my XP Pro.

All of the sudden I got the message on my machine that the Network had been disconnected. We had to reboot her machine and we were able to connect and play for a bit but got messed up again.

Next morning I had to reboot the machine a couple of times before it would boot. But then it did come up in safe mode ( no surprise there ) Bit iy did reboot to normal mode.

Now. When I click on " Connect to the Internet " I get the Message " Failed to load Connection Wizard Helper Components "

When I open Network Neighborhood and Open Entire Network I get the Message " Unable to browse the Network. The Network is not accessable. "

What seems odd to me is that we can play cards etc. between the machines using TCP/IP and the machine address. Such as 192.168.1 xxx and we DO NOT have to enter it manually.

When I check on my XP machine it shows all machines that are actually on.

    PS.

:) We have not had the guts to try Golf again yet. :)

If you haven't already done it, you may need to make a floppy from your XP machine after running network setup wizard and then use it on your 98se box to install XP networking components including NetBEUI (I think thats whats on there). Seen some 98 boxes that just don't like to network with XP without it and others that could care less. Might not be the fix you need but isn't going to hurt anything either.

Well after doing some checking I did find one thing that I should have know anyway. And the darn thing is on the Internet anyway. As I said earlier " I wrote the post from it. "

The Connect To the Internet has nothing to do with the LAN side of things. That is Apparently for Dial up. Plus I get he same messaage fron it on another 98SE machine that is working fine. So I am forgeting that part.

But what realy bugs me is that all has been OK every since XP came out.

ALSO and what I maybe had better be looking closer at is the fact that I may have and HD going sour. My Wife told me today that just about every other time she turns it on the message that Windows was not shut down properly and scandisk must be run.

Also I noticed that the machine is shutting down VERY quickly after we select to shutdown. Could that possibley be involved ?

But I do have to admit. I can't seem to find the place to change that setting. And the game use TCP/IP and using an address to connect.

Well right now I am being challange to a game of Cribbage. So we will give the thing a test on that side.

A thought that popped into my mind.

:) What there is of it :)

The Golf game we were playing the night the problem occurred was a game that had been saved ON MY XP MACHINE

Just maybe it was not a game that we had played between the two machines.

And even if it was and I had made any changes on either machine, would that have any effect. I had changed Video cards on this machine.

BTW. I have checked and I can set things on the problem machine to be shared and copy then from another. Or I can copy stuff from another machine to it.

So that says to me that the actuall Network is working.
