My Internet Explorer caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0004: 00000499,...the details list specific Registers, Bytes, and Stack Dump, then when I click close I am bumped off the web and IE6 disappears back into the desktop logo only. If I visit any website the error mess pops up in the midst of the page I am on. I cannot close it because I am bumped off whatever site I am on so I move it aside. I have a related and secondary problem in another error message which reads: IEXPLORE has caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 018f:bff88396, followed by the detail of Registers, bytes, and stack dumps affected. Norton Anti-virus had quaranteened some item a few days ago. Contacting microsoft has been fruitless so far as they will not serve Windows 98 users after July 2003, so I have visited this bulletin board and sent messages out to other forums, but so far nobody has been able to identify and offer solution. How to fix? don@mymethow.com.

I would try this, run the System File Checker. Go to Start\Run and type in SFC and press Enter. Then click on Start in the SFC window, have your Windows CD handy, or know the location of your windows files [usually C:\Windows\Options\Cabs].
If any files come up as corrupt, replace them. If prompted to reboot, please do so.
Then go to Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, and double click the entry for Internet Explorer, you will get a window with Repair as an option. Select it and reboot when prompted.
