Hello. I do a lot of video capturing, some VHS and some digital. I use Firewire to capture from the digital camcorder and from a stand alone vhs to digital converter. I have been doing this for about 10 years and for the first the other day I had trouble with my computer installing my capture hardware. In the capture screen of my software it said "capture device not connected" When I checked the hardware manager there was a yellow tag next to AVC device. I looked at Properties and there was an error during installation of AVC device. I uninstalled the device and restarted the computer with the device connected and everything worked fine on boot up. When I unplugged the firewire and later plugged it back in the same problem came up. Normally my Firewire devices are detected just fine without reboot. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks,
    D

It looks like you are having virtually the same problem as I am, except that you can get yours to work by plugging in before switch-on, which I can't. I have been capturing from my camcorder for at least five years with no trouble but when I tried again a month ago I got 'Failed to initialise device'. The discussions under my thread 'Camcorder not recognised' have not born any fruit and since XP is designed to recognise a camcorder automatically I am beginning to think reluctantly that I shall have to reinstall XP, as I have tried everything I and others have suggested with NO success at all. I have run a driver check, which reports that my Firewire driver is out of date, but I am reluctant to spend money on the updater program in case it is not the answer. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
