Ideas anyone before I drive over to try and solve this? This message pops up, so I am told, when the computer boots up and it will not to connect to the Internet.

I am told that the full message reads ....

Error in RAS Enumerate Entries. Error = 23. Cannot continue execution.

    Details please PeteC.

    What OS?

    Why are they using RAS?

How do they connect to the internet? Router problems can cause this error?

:( Brain not in gear last night after a long drive home following 3 weeks caring for parents.

OS is XP + SP 1 - being away so much since Sept I am not keen on installing SP 2 and then going away for a few weeks just in case of problems.

Internet connection is dial up via internal modem, no router.

Can't answer that - I built the computer a couple of years ago and maintain it. At no time have I dabbled with RAS and nor would the user - he is basically computer illiterate.

My inclination is to create a new connection. Visiting on Thursday.

Check the status on the 3 services shown in the picture. Probably all should be not running. I think you can disable them if need be.

Check via msconfig or HJT for strange startup stuff.

I'm not positive about the error but my best guess is that something is trying to set up and confirm some route table entries and is blowing up. From what you say of their setup, this is rogue activity.

I may be off base but that's where I'd start.

I should never try to do anything at that unearthly hour of the morning. Never.

Problem solved - temporarily at least.

RAS error was connected with his ISP connection manager software.

Looked in Network Connections with the intention of setting up a new connection - window was completely blank, not even the New Connection Wizard was there!

Looked in Event Viewer - a multitude of bad block errors relating to disk 0 which started at the same time the RAS error appeared.

Ran checkdsk and all is now well, but disk has bad sectors - new disk on order.

Likely cause - long story short ....

Secondary monitor went off - power cable had pulled out. Friend plugged cable back in without powering down the PC or monitor supply first and this tripped the house mains supply. Reset mains, rebooted and RAS error appeared.

My best guess is that disk 0 was reading/writing and the heads crashed onto the disk damaging the platter.

Awk. Not fun but does sound likely.
