    hi.

    have a couple of questions about the error checking tool.
    (which exists in DriveProperties->Tools Tab)

    can someone tell me the filename of this error checking tool..is it chkdsk ?
    Why doesn't it appear in the list of programs in the Task Scheduler Wizard ?

    Is there some state in widowsxp where these tools can be run just before the OS starts completely ? - If so how do i get to this state

    Am using winxp Pro-SP2

    thankyou.

    Starsurfer.

    There are three versions of the error checking software on a typical XP system.

    The familiar chkdsk.exe resides in the system32. directory.

    The version that runs in the GUI of Windows is found within a dll named untfs.dll. (or ufat.dll if using the fat32 file storage system) Those are in the system32 directory.

    The version that runs on reboot is named autochk.exe and is found in the system32 directory also. There are other copies for backups.

    MS explains that in more detail here.

    hi,

    thanks that was some interesting info.
    how could i force a Volume to be checked on startup ?

    also, you know those times chkdsk runs automatically on boot ? - in those instances how could i make chkdsk pause after the scan so i can read the info on the screen, & then make it continue after i supply some input. - since usually it doesn't pause & allow you to read the report.

    In the GUI version, if you tag the box labeled "Automatically fix file system errors," it will ask you if you want to allow it to run when you reboot.

    You cannot pause it to read the results but you can go to the Run window and type eventvwr.msc <enter> and look under applications for Winlogon. Double click it and the results of the error check will be there.
